The Owl EconChallenge team of Witt Hawkins, Grayson Lee, and Zack Spisak took first place in the state economics competition March 21 at Tennessee State University in Nashville. They competed against 28 teams in the preliminary, online round of the David Ricardo division, for students who have taken one semester of introductory or general, combined macroeconomics and microeconomics. At the state final they faced three teams.

“They won convincingly in the quiz bowl round,” Mr. John Knaff, instructor in math and economics, said. The win qualifies the team to compete in the national semifinal, a written test administered at school on April 15. The top four scorers in each division of the national semifinals will be invited to compete in the national finals in New York City May 17 and 18.
Knaff’s economics teams excelled in the initial, online portion of the 2014 Tennessee EconChallenge and Tennessee FinanceChallenge this winter, qualifying for the state finals in both. In the EconChallenge online exam – a 30-question, rapid-fire test consisting of macro, micro, and international questions – the Owl teams ranked first and second in the state, scoring more than 400 points above the average score.
In the FinanceChallenge online test, all three MUS teams qualified for state competition, scoring 300 points above the average score. Each team completed online exams that covered topics in financial literacy: income, money management, credit, savings, and investing. (MUS did not compete in the state FinanceChallenge due to schedule conflicts.)
Sponsors for the programs include The Center for Economic Education at The University of Memphis in collaboration with the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, Memphis Branch; the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, Nashville Branch; and Tennessee State University.
