18 Reach Perfection on Latin Exam

May 9, 2014

Pictured, front row, from left, are Latin I students Alexander Goodwin, Jackson Howell, Charlie Evans, Matthew Temple, Benton Ferebee, Jon Staffel, Jason Wang, Jackson Moody (Chang Yu not pictured); second row, Latin II students Henry Trammell, Aneesh Ram, Brooks Eikner, Tom Wells; Latin III students Witt Fesmire, Will McAtee, Patton Orr, Bilal Siddiq; and Latin Poetry IV student Richard Ouyang.

Eighteen Owls – that translates to XVIII Bubones – earned perfect scores on the 2014 National Latin Exam, and 111 received gold or silver medals, according to Mr. Trey Suddarth, chair of the Department of Foreign Languages. Junior Richard Ouyang received his third perfect score, which put him in select company: Only 28 students in the nation out of the 140,000 who participated in the exam program this year achieved the same feat.

“These results are a tribute to our students’ hard work in the classroom. Even though two snow days pinched their preparation time, they produced excellent results,” Suddarth said. “For the third consecutive year, every Upper School student who took the National Latin Exam received an award of some kind.”

Suddarth noted that the tally of 18 perfect scores matches a school record set in 2012 that placed MUS fifth in the nation. “When the report is out this summer, we hope to learn our 2014 scores will again place us among the top-achieving schools nationally.”
